Who's your Hero?
Apr 23, 2024In a world where marriage is often romanticized and based on fleeting emotions, there's a profound truth that often gets overlooked: the strength of your marriage depends far more on your beliefs about God than on your feelings for each other. This might seem like a bold statement, so let's unpack it.
Jesus Changes Everything.
When Jesus enters the picture, everything shifts. His teachings, his example of sacrificial love, and his call to selflessness provide the ultimate framework for a thriving marriage. Jesus is the hero of our story! In the chaos of daily life, it's easy to lose sight of this truth. But when we anchor our marriage in Jesus Christ, we tap into a reservoir of strength and grace that transcends our own abilities.
Our beliefs about God shape how we view ourselves, our spouse, and the purpose of our union. If we see ourselves as mere individuals seeking personal fulfillment, our marriage becomes a transactional arrangement aimed at meeting our own needs. However, when we understand that we are created in the image of God, designed for relationship and to reflect His love, our perspective shifts. We see our spouse not just as a partner but as a fellow image-bearer, deserving of love, honor, and respect.
OVER & ABOVE THAT, when we grasp the purpose of our union as something bigger than ourselves, a reflection of Christ's love for the Church, it transforms how we approach challenges and celebrate victories together. Our marriage becomes a platform to glorify God and to serve others, rather than a pursuit of individual happiness.
Fix Your Eyes on the Hero of the story, Jesus…..
In the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy to get distracted and lose focus. But just as a ship needs a fixed point on the horizon to stay on course, our marriage needs a fixed point as well, Jesus Christ. When we fix our eyes on Him, everything else falls into place. We learn to love sacrificially, forgive readily, and extend grace abundantly.
Here are a few versus that speak volumes to where my thoughts come from and confirm them…..
2 Corinthians 10:5 and Philippians 4:8
The apostle Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 10:5 remind us of the importance of aligning our thoughts with the truth of God's Word. "We must demolish arguments and every claim that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, taking captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." Likewise, Philippians 4:8 calls on us to dwell on "whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise." When we filter our thoughts and attitudes through these understandings, our marriage reflects the beauty of God's character.
Take a moment to pause and reflect about the hero of your story and while your thinking of all Jesus has done for you, and your spouse, I'd like you to write a prayer specifically for your spouse. Next to God, you know their needs. Pray for their growth, their joy, their peace, and their relationship with God. As you do, you'll find your own heart softened, your love deepened, and your marriage strengthened.
I'm going to wrap this up here, the strength of your marriage indeed depends far more on your beliefs about God than on your feelings for each other. So let's anchor our marriages in Christ, fix our eyes on Him, and build a union that glorifies God and reflects His love to the world.
