Laughter; the potent medicine~
Apr 04, 2024Recently I read a blog written by Jason and Tori Benham and in it they talked about how important it is to laugh in your marriage. How when you laugh, especially in the midst of conflict, you "extinguish the anger that results from butting heads". I couldn’t agree more and wanted to remind you, or maybe tell you this for the first time, if you are fighting and want to diffuse the fight immediately, GET NAKED!
Not too long ago I put a post up on our social media page with some tips to "Navigate the ups and downs of married life". The premise was that sometimes all you need is a really good laugh, and sometimes that laugh will lead to some really good…well you know ;)
So let's chat about this most marvelous gift bestowed upon us by the Almighty. God created laughter and infused it with the power to heal our bodies, minds, and relationships!
Let us take a moment and appreciate that laughter has a miraculous way of touching every aspect of our being, from the depths of our souls to the sparkle in our eyes. It's a universal language, transcending barriers of culture, language, and even time.
But have you ever stopped to ponder just why laughter holds such immense power?
In the grand design of creation, God wove in laughter as the brightest thread, adding hues of joy and merriment to the human experience. From the innocent giggles of children to the hearty belly laughs shared between couples and among friends, laughter is woven into the very fabric of our existence.
But it's not just a happy accident. Oh no, laughter is a divine creation designed to bring light into our lives, to lift us up when we're down, and to connect us in moments of shared hilarity. Think about it: when was the last time you laughed so hard your cheeks hurt and tears streamed down your face? That, my friends, is a taste of the divine.
And it dosnt stop there, it heals!
Scientific research has shown time and time again that laughter is more than just a mood-booster – it's a potent medicine for both body and soul.
Physiologically, laughter releases endorphins, those feel-good hormones that flood our bodies with happiness and relaxation. It boosts our immune system, lowers stress hormones, and even improves blood flow. In short, laughter is nature's way of saying, "Hey, let's take a break from all that seriousness and just enjoy the moment!"
It's also a potent balm for our relationships, especially in the sacred bond of marriage. Ah, marriage – a beautiful journey filled with love, companionship, and the occasional disagreement over who left the toilet seat up or the daily frustration of "what do you want for dinner", that turns into a full on war.
One of the most powerful aspects of laughter in marriage is its ability to alleviate conflict. Picture this scenario: you and your spouse are in the midst of a heated argument, tensions running high and words flying like arrows. Suddenly, one of you starts to pull off all cloths, and before you know it, you're both doubled over with laughter or heading for the bedroom! Laughter will come later……
In that moment, the tension dissipates, replaced by a shared sense of joy and camaraderie. Silliness, or shenanigan's as I like to say, have a way of diffusing conflict, breaking down walls, and reminding us that beneath the surface, we're still two people who love each other deeply.
So, how can we tap into the miracle cure that is laughter in our marriages?
It's simple, really.
Make laughter a priority in your relationship. Seek out moments of joy and silliness, whether it's watching a funny movie together, sharing inside jokes, or simply snuggling up in bed and watching Tiktok videos of crazy animals (there are a lot, have you looked up the capybara?!?!?).
And when conflict inevitably arises – as it does in every relationship – don't be afraid to sprinkle a little laughter into the mix. Remembering this, you're on the same team, and sometimes, a shared laugh is all it takes to bridge the gap and find common ground.
Perfectly Imperfect,
Sam & Ron
